Event Review: MCM Birmingham (March 2019)
The 23rd and 24th of March marked the start of convention season for many con-goers. MCM Expo hosted by Reedpop took place at Birmingham’s famous NEC and attracted thousands of comic, TV and film fans including some outstanding cosplayers.
Guests included the Queen of Geek; Felicia Day (The Guild, Buffy, Supernatural) Asa Butterfield (Merlin, Enders Game, Sex Education) and Alison and Luther (Emmy Raver-Lampman and Tom Hopper) from the acclaimed new Netflix show The Umbrella Academy. These guests, in particular, proved a huge attraction for Cosplayers with many Umbrella Academy groups spotted throughout the weekend.
Despite how busy the convention was over the entire weekend I must compliment ReedPop on their organisation of the guest signing area. There was plenty of space for fans to queue while waiting for their autographs without encroaching on vendor space or the general over-crowding some signing areas attract.
Speaking of vendors, due to the high number of attendees I did not get to properly browse all of the stalls myself but was pleasantly surprised by the number and variety of stalls. The usual favourites were in attendance such as Genki Gear and Emerald City Cupcakes along with several comic, statue and action figure vendors. Alongside these were many new and unique gift stalls selling everything from gothic cheeseboards to LARP tankards for your favourite mead.
Along with comic, film and television related activities, you could also seek out the “Side Quest” area for gaming, boasting freeplay Fortnite, a Minecraft tournament and Retro gaming.
The Silver Sabres Combat Academy was on-hand to offer free Jedi training. And there was even a hugely popular live DnD session with Outside Xbox’s “Oxventure”.
The dedicated Children’s Area included a reading corner, chill-out area, face painting and free-build Lego. Fun for kids big and small.
Meanwhile, the Artists Alley hosted many established comic book names alongside up-and-coming artists selling prints, commissions and trinkets.
A personal favourite is Tea and Paintwater whose work has a magical fairy-tale quality in both digital art and watercolours.
The cosplay area held a Cosplay Repair Station and the wonderful Poly-Props were in attendance giving their expertise on all things foam, clay and thermoplastic.
The Cosplay Stage itself held both a specific Hellboy cosplay contest and the regular masquerade which attracted the usual large crowds.

All in all, ReedPop are bringing a level of polished organisation to an already popular event and we can’t wait for the next one!
