Harley Quinn Play Arts Kai DC Variant Figure by Tetsuya Nomura // Cosplay by maweezy

I’ve always been drawn to the Play Arts Kai DC figures, and I wanted to really challenge myself bringing one of them to life. Harley Quinn is one of my favorite DC villains, and although I cosplayed her many times, I wanted to give this version a try! What’s more interesting about this cosplay is that the figure that this was inspired by actually has two parts to it, a “Nurse” part and then the “Armored” part. It was only fitting that I replicate that in the cosplay itself.

This was my first cosplay that was constructed using mostly foam. I used to work mostly with worbla, but that can get really heavy and expensive. The geometric shapes of the figure allowed me to first play with shapes using scrap cardstock, and then transferring final patterns to foam. It took some time and patience, but totally worth it in the end because the costume was so light and wearable! I also had the help of my good friends to finish painting everything in time for the con.

The helmet and jester collar were the most complicated aspect of the whole costume, because it was my first time making a full-face helmet out of foam and the obscure shape of the jester collar was really hard to replicate. Typically I would’ve found an existing pattern online, but I couldn’t find a helmet with a similar shape, so I had to construct the whole thing freely. After MUCH trial and error, I was able to figure it out!

I knew about cosplay since I was little, but I didn’t really get into it until 2012 when I attended my first ever comic convention. The dedication and hard work of the other cosplayers that I saw at that con was what inspired me to try it out myself. Ever since I was hooked!

It’s a new year, so I’m excited to see what this year will bring. I’m excited to see my growth as a person,  as a nurse during this pandemic, and as a cosplayer full of ideas. I’m also looking forward to a brighter future for this nation, and hopefully an end to this horrible pandemic.
