Securing your accounts

A few weeks back, I saw a friend’s accounts got hacked and their account was used to send out messages without them knowing until it was too late.

This got me thinking about how secure are your social media accounts are? One of the best ways of securing your account is using a Two-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication, or 2FA as it’s commonly abbreviated, adds an extra step to your basic log-in procedure. Without 2FA, you enter in your username and password, and then you’re done. The password is your single factor of authentication. The second factor makes your account more secure. This second authentication can be in the form of a random number generated confirmation, SMS/email message, app notification, etc.

I’ve put together a list of instructions from popular platforms and social media site on how to add two-factor authentication.

Instagram

  1. Go to your profile and tap the “3 lines” icon, then tap Settings.
  2. Tap Security and then scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Switch on Authentication App, then tap Set Up Manually. If you don’t see the toggle switch, tap Get Started.
  4. Tap Copy Key below the Instagram key and paste it into your authentication app (example: Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator).
    • Note: You should copy the key code to your clipboard, take a screenshot, or save it in some other way since you won’t be able to access the code again once you’ve finished setting up.
  5. After your Instagram account is linked to your authentication app, copy the 6-digit code your authentication app creates.
  6. Go back to the Instagram app, tap Next and paste the 6-digit code to complete the process on that device.

Twitter

  1. Click the checkbox next to Authentication app.
  2. Read the overview instructions, then click Start.
  3. If prompted, enter your password and click Verify.
  4. You’ll be prompted to link your authentication app to your Twitter account by scanning a QR code.(If you don’t already have an app installed on your device, you’ll need to download one. You can use any time-based one time password (TOTP) authentication app like Google Authenticator, Authy, Duo Mobile, 1Password, etc.)
  5. After you scan the QR code, click Next.
  6. Enter the code generated by your authentication app, then click Verify.
  7. You’ll see a confirmation screen. Click Got it to finish setup.

Facebook

  1. Go to your Security and Login Settings.
  2. Scroll down to Use two-factor authentication and click Edit.
  3. Choose the security method you want to add and follow the on-screen instructions.

Twitch

To begin set-up of two-factor authentication, the following is required:

  1. A verified Twitch account (your email tied to your Twitch account must be verified in order to enable 2FA)
  2. Access to a computer (2FA can only be enabled via desktop)

Once your account is verified and you’re ready to set-up 2FA:

  1. Head to your security settings page.
  2. Select Enable Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Enter your Twitch password.
  4. Enter your phone number.
  5. Enter the verification code you receive via text message or the Authy app (if you are already an Authy user).

Google (E.g. Emails)

  1. Go to your Google Account.
  2. On the left navigation panel, click Security.
  3. On the Signing in to Google panel, click 2-Step Verification.
  4. Click Get started.
  5. Follow the steps on the screen.

Yahoo

  1. Sign in and go to your Account security page.
  2. Beside “Two-step verification,” click the Toggle button to turn it on.
  3. Enter your mobile number.
  4. Click Send SMS or Call me to get a verification code.
  5. Enter the verification code, then click Verify.
  6. If you access Yahoo Mail in third-party apps, click Create app passwords or click Skip for now.

Please note: Adding 2FA only makes your account more secure, not 100% secure. Please do follow other securing tips of changing passwords where possible and any other tip provided by your social media account.

I am happy to share that I’ll be at MCM London in October 2026, from 23rd to 25th October, all three days of the event. I’ll be there with my camera, taking photos, recording videos, and streaming live from the event in and around the complex, showcasing what you can see over the weekend. If you’d like photos from me at the event, you can book me starting Monday, September 28th, at 6 pm. However, I need to share an important update about my schedule. As for the previous schedule I released, I will only be bookable on Friday, 23rd October and Sunday, 25th October. Each bookable slot is 30 minutes long, and we may not take all that time to take photos. The 30-minute timeframe allows me to fit as many cosplayers as possible to shoot with and also allows cosplayers to spend time with other photographers/videographers or spend time at the event shopping, attending or doing another aspect of the event. There are other conditions I want to share when considering booking a slot with me. Please only book with me if you know what cosplay you want to shoot with me. If you do not declare your cosplay, I will cancel the appointment Pick a time that you can reasonably get to me. If on the day you are running late, I won’t be able to reschedule, and you will forfeit your time slot, as I do not want a knock-on effect of running late for my other appointments. If you pick more than one slot, I can choose which cosplay I’d like to shoot. This isn’t a reflection on your cosplay, but I want to give everyone a chance to shoot with me at least once over the weekend.  If we have taken photos together before, please choose a character or cosplay we haven’t shot yet. Only cosplayers who are 18 years of age or older I am not accepting any group shoots. I’ll consider a duo shoot. I’ll share a link to my booking schedule on my social media pages and website, so please keep an eye out.
