Geek christmas has come and gone with San Diego Comic Con taking place this past weekend, the biggest comic con in the USA, quite possibly the world , considering how many people flock to the states to be a part of the experience. Although I’m fairly certain that London MCM is close behind and considering its popularity is steadily increasing, I’m sure that will become just as popular as SDCC.
But for now, lets talk about some of the trailers that came out of the con this year. With Disney/Marvel being a no show, it was pretty much dominated by all the happenings surrounding DC properties, movies, tv shows and other popular shows, so lets delve in and talk about what we can take away cosplay wise.
Shazam
The Shazam trailer seemed very popular, with Zachary Levi bringing some lightheartedness to the role. The suit I have seen a fair few people cosplay, but It would be interesting to see this version of the suit, maybe using the same principle of the arc reactor used for Iron man suits but the challenge of it being on a skin tight suit will be great to see if pulled off.
Aquaman
This trailer looked stunning and really looked like DC are gonna pull out all the stops to make Aquaman a big hit to follow behind the path that Wonder Woman has started for DC. Due to both Aquaman and Mera appearing in JL, their costumes have been done spectacularly by talented cosplayers, so I hope that there may be new costumes ot minor tweeks that will give some of the best a chance to show of their designing skills.
Glass
This new universe that M. Night Shyamalan has started to build, although is starting to build traction, still feels new and scary to me, but it’s good to see him use his previous properties and continue on, while at the same time, understanding the changing climate of what people currently want to see. Cosplay wise, although it may not be big and bright like other cosplays, I would love to see a glass cosplay one day!
Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald
The second installment of the Fantastic Beasts franchise, and a continuation for the Harry Potter fandom to enjoy as Newt Scamander continues on his adventures, which coincide with the battle between Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Percival Wulfric “Brian” Dumbledore. Newt Scamander cosplays were amazing after the first movie and with the addition of a fan favourite like Dumbledore, it will be exciting to see the amazing colourful garments that we are use to seeing from the future headmaster.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters
WHERE IS MY GODZILLA COSPLAY!? this is like what the 4th movie (?) with this behemoth in, yet I have not seen a Godzilla cosplay as of yet! I don’t mean those bloody blow up ones! If we can get a 7 foot Thanos made up, if we can see a fully realized Groot cosplay, then I want a good godzilla cosplay dayum it!
Titans
Wow this one has been controversial eh? With fans being split about this, from the casting of characters, to the portrayal of the titular character Robin, some saying he is too dark or too Jason Todd, and some saying that this version of Robin seems to be drawing nods and traits from Dick Grayson leading to his transformation from Robin to Nightwing. Either way, it has gotten the attention, especially on the costumes, Robin’s in particular to be incredibly accurate and dynamic……….HA! accidental pun! love it!
Doctor Who
The Whovians are very excited to see Jodie Whittaker’s take on The Doctor, a character that is spanning many generations. With this new change, introduces the chance to have female cosplayers have their take on Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, but can also expand upon what the past doctors would look like as women!
Deadly Class
The Russo Brothers, while having some down time from Avengers, have been working on this no holds barred comic adaptation, which looks very brutal but incredibly fun! From one glance at the trailer, there is a lot of potential for group cosplays that can be fully recognised after watching this tv series!
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
A surprise for the star wars fandom as it was announced that The Clone Wars would be picked up where it was left in 2013, which means a return of fan favourite characters and amazing cosplays and lightsabers. May the force be with you in your cosplay choices!
Star Trek: Discovery
Fans of the new Star Trek series on Netflix will be happy with the announcement of a second season making its way. This will mean brand new adventures and hopefully we can see some nice prosthetic work that some of our best cosplayers can use to bring these characters to life.
CW TV series
All of your favourites shows revolving around DC’s Arrowverse are coming back with new seasons, so Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash, The Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning will be back with new villians, and hopefully new suits for us fans to marvel over and imitate at our local comic cons.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly
I am ashamed of myself for not seeing the new Super series of Dragonball, but fans of the fighters will be excited to see Goku and Vegeta square of against one of the most powerful pure saiyans of all time, Broly! Dragon ball cosplayers are some of the most fun loving cosplayers out there and it’s always amazing to their creations, so I can’t wait to see what comes after this showdown!
There you have it folks, some exciting movies and tv shows making their way to a screen near you and I personally can not wait to see some of the amazing cosplays that will come from these and other shows and movies that we will all be seeing in the upcoming year!
