Cosplayer of the Week: Red Lion Cosplay

I discovered one half of Red Lion Cosplay through a Tolkien meet at a MCM a few years ago and was instantly blown away by his Thorin Oakenshield cosplay. To this day, I’ve still never seen a better one. This interview focuses on one half of the team, but don’t worry, we’re not leaving anyone out! Tune in next week to see the works of the second half of this dynamic duo.

What would you say is your favourite part of the costume making process?

I think my favourite part is when you’ve been working on a really tricky piece of the costume and you’ve failed and failed and failed and then suddenly you get a lightbulb moment about what you’ve been doing wrong. So you try it again and it just works. That feeling of accomplishment is the best.

Who or what inspired you to first start cosplaying?

Oh man that was so long ago I can barely remember. I think my first ever cosplay was Hannibal Smith from the A-Team (2012) because I loved how badass he looked and I had a bit of a thing for Liam Neeson!

What would you say is your most complicated costume so far?

Thorin Oakenshield’s king armour for sure. There were so many tricky parts and angles on that. I don’t ever fancy remaking that purely because of the stress of building it first time around!

Do you have a dream cosplay you’d like to work towards one day?

I’d love to make Kimahri Ronso from Final Fantasy! I’ve always loved his design.

If you could give any advice to someone new to the world of cosplay, what would it be?

I would probably say that as difficult as it may be, try not to be intimidated by the costumes already out there. Nobody ever started off knowing everything so just always give it your best shot and year by year you’ll improve.
