Without a shadow of a doubt, Briar Rose Cosplay is one of my favourite cosplayers the UK has to offer at the moment. As her name suggests, shes not unfamiliar with Disney princesses and certainly pulls them off to an incredible standard, but don’t worry if that’s not your cup of tea – Briar Rose Cosplay is anything but a one trick pony!

What inspired you to first start cosplaying?
Before cosplaying I used to write a fashion blog, and I put together a lot of outfits inspired by Disney characters. I loved taking photos of them out on location and using props. Once I’d picked up some basic sewing/crafting skills, cosplay was a natural progression. I was hugely inspired at the time by cosplayers such as Traci Hines, Joanna Bert and Amber Arden.
What’s your favourite part of the costume making process?
Probably that moment when a costume starts to look vaguely recognisable! After all the research and material sourcing and pattern drafting, it’s the best feeling.
What would you say has been your most challenging build so far?
Probably my Princess Serenity costume from last year. The light up Moon Stick staff was my first sizeable prop build, and the detailing on the bodice alone took 100 hours with 2000 pearl beads and 3000 rhinestones. My fingers ache thinking about it!
Do you have a dream cosplay you’d like to work towards?
I have a couple! One of them is Margaery’s Purple Wedding dress from Game of Thrones, and the other is an Aurora dress that’s both pink and blue. I’ve just started working on the latter!
If you could give someone new to the world of cosplay one piece of advice, what would it be?
I’d probably say that comparison is the thief of joy. By all means look at more established cosplayers for inspiration, but don’t be disheartened if your work isn’t at the same standard yet. Also iron your seams, always get fabric samples if you’re buying online, and if you’re using a hoop skirt, wear a petticoat over it!
