Antman and the Wasp Review

Ant Man And The Wasp Poster

One of the most underrated movies of the MCU, Antman was a breath of fresh air for me, as it was a polar opposite to the serious Avengers Age of Ultron and delivered a lot of humour in the marvel spirit.

I was very excited for the second installment, and to be honest, I feel like this movie has delivered on a lot of different levels! Antman and the Wasp picks up after Civil War and deals with the fallout of Scott Lang’s choice to join Captain America and how it effects his relationships with his daughter, and his relationship with Hank Pym and Hope Van Dyne. We also go on a journey to rescue Hope’s mother, Janet, from the quantum realm and come into contact with a new super powered villain described as Ghost.

This movie feels like a pallet cleanse after the events of Infinity War. Where we had a sense of hopelessness that only seemed to heighten the further we went into Infinity War, Antman and the Wasp was incredibly lighthearted and funny, while also keeping the sense of urgency with the rescue mission for Janet Van Dyne. This movie also showed it’s growth by finding new ways to incorporate it’s shrinking and growing premise, to keep the idea fresh and not feeling stale. My personal favourites include the shrinking and growing cars and the use of the growing and shrinking tech in battles, especially during the final battle between the antagonists and Ghost.

For me, the stand out performance has to go to Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp, she took on the best action scenes and shows a lot of emotion, compared to her first outing. Paul Rudd was outstanding again as always and Michael Peña with his crew were as funny as ever. New additions include Walton Goggins as a very creepy black market Barry who seemed very menacing in his role, Lawrence Fishbourne as Bill Foster which he played quite well, and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost. While I was happy that Marvel seem to be moving away from their hero/villain mirroring, having Ghost using phasing abilities, I couldn’t help but feel that she was a bit forgettable, even though she provided some great action in her role.

Ant Man and The Wasp

Since the first Antman, there has been a recent surge of Antman cosplays, and I would love to see more, what I would also like to see is the challenge of make the wings for a Wasp cosplay. When I was doing a Wasabi cosplay, I thought about using tissue paper and PVA glue, watered down to make the blades. Maybe using this technique might give the wings a nice look, as well as using wire to keep the shape. What I would also love to see is an Ant-ony cosplay, yes I’m still hung up on that! He was the best ant!!!

Spoiler up ahead!

Make sure you stay until the end of the movie. Even though the movie is incredibly fun and lighthearted, I was not ready for the mid credit scene. Shame on you Marvel! Too soon! Forever too soon!
