Cosplayer of the Week: Moonlily Cosplay

If you’re looking for anime cosplay, you’re in luck – Moonlily Cosplay has it in spades and does so with excellent execution. With a good few years of experience under her belt, I’d absolutely recommend checking her out for inspiration.

What’s your favourite part of the costume making process?

I really love focusing on the little details of costumes and spending time getting them right. I actually really enjoy things like embroidery, beading etc which can seem boring and repetitive, but I find them quite relaxing! I always love adding lots of bling to costumes too.

Speaking of details in costuming, what would you say is your most complicated build so far?

Most complicated is probably my Princess Sakura which I made for the world cosplay summit. The design is one of those deceptive ones that seems easy but in fact has a ton of different techniques and details – from individually resin casting all the gems and coins (so many coins!) as well as making metres upon metres of piping, satin stitching, even making shoes… it was a huge learning curve for me but I love challenging myself and learning new skills.

What inspired you to first start cosplaying?

I’ve always pretended to be my favourite characters, and when I discovered cosplay online I just knew I had to do it. Really it was love of characters which got me into cosplay to begin with, but my friend persuaded me and gave me the confidence to give it a go at my first con.

Do you have a dream cosplay that you’d like to work towards?

My dream cosplays aren’t particularly complicated, but rather characters that I’ve always been worried I won’t be able to do justice to. A big one is Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, because he’s one of my favourite characters I didn’t want to do it until I felt like I could do a good job and have everything exactly how I want it. But fingers crossed I’ll finally be cosplaying him next year! I want to bite the bullet and do it!

If you could go back in time and give newbie Moonlily and advice, what would it be?

Mine would be to learn how to use make up and actually wear it with cosplays. It makes such a difference in photographs and really brings a cosplay together after all that work making it! On a more personal level I’d tell her to be less shy and talk to other cosplayers more! I got there in the end but I was so socially shy my first few cons!
