The horror genre has currently been thriving with the release of It, as well as the resurgence of the cult classic Saw movie franchise with a new installment, Jigsaw. With these movie titles recently released, here comes another installment in a horror movie franchise: Insidious: The Last Key. This is the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise that focuses on the ghost hunters Specs and Tucker, along with the ghost medium Elise Rainier, who goes to investigate ghostly happenings in an old house that Elise is all too familiar with.
The premise for this movie was a common one that has been seen in a lot of horror movies, but with the twist that the Insidious franchise can only offer. All in all I actually really enjoyed this movie. When it comes to horror movie franchises, the longer they go, they begin to feel complacent. I felt that Insidious: The Last Key had a good identity in the franchise, with a good balance of scares and humour. The story itself was well paced, and intriguing, and the scares, while some were obvious, were also actually quite unique. At points, they happened when you weren’t expecting them. Whilst its not a great movie, if you’re looking for a nice scare, its a good shout.
When it comes to a good horror movie, what makes it unique is the villain, or more often than that the monsters. There needs to be a good scare factor when it comes to a horror villain. All the greats have that fear around them. Freddy Kreuger, Jason, Alien all have that edge that makes you shudder and wonder whether you wouldn’t mind keeping all the house lights on until the end of time. As a cosplayer, its always fun to bring that fear to life. It’s the reason why the clown from It has become more popular, because the renewed movie brought a new sense of fear to the character.
I feel that, given the most recent surge in horror movies, that horror cosplays will start to make a comeback in a big way. They will move on from the zombie cosplays relating to The Walking Dead series, to classic horror icons, like the ones I’ve mentioned previously, as well as those such as Predator, Terminator, the ghoul from the first Insidious movie, and video game horror characters from iconic titles as Silent Hill, Resident Evil.
It’s a good time for the cosplay community to branch out and get its scare on, so I hope that more innovative horror characters can be brought to the forefront. We will be able to use the resources available to make these scary icons come to life once again. What I want to see is someone with some pink ball sack like prosthetics on their chin and some foam knives on their fingers, so that I can finally get that Scary Terry photo!
