Cosplayer of the Week: Tennyo Celeste Cosplay

Anyone who follows Food and Cosplay will know that Tennyo Celeste Cosplay is technically a friend of Food and Cosplay (Anna moved to Canada to be closer to her after all) but she is totally worthy of Cosplayer of the Week and we were delighted when someone nominated her for it!! It just gives us an excuse to spam the world with her fantastic face.

Age: 25

Location: Calgary, AB

What is your favourite food? Do I have to choose? I LOVE ALL KINDS OF FOOD. I eat everything.  But if I had to pick, Japanese food hands down.

So you live in Canada so I have to ask, how do you guys deal with cosplaying in the cold?

Planning accordingly I guess. Either by picking outfits that would actually keep you warm or lugging along a jacket. Or worst case scenario, just tough it out. Anything for the cosplay haha.

Luckily conventions are indoors and we only leave the comforts of the heat filled buildings to do photoshoots, then we run like mad back inside.

You have a lot of large group cosplays like RWBY, Monster High, the League of Legends pool party. How long does it usually take to organise these big shoots? What’s been your craziest story from one of these shoots?

Pre-photoshoot organizing hmm, I would say a few weeks, even months. With such a large group we try to organize earlier to accommodate everyone’s schedule cause obviously we would want everyone or as much or everyone there as we can manage. So even just selecting a date that works can be difficult. This also gives people a chance to claim characters and make their outfits. Other logistic usually don’t take too long to be decided on. Everyone tends to pitch it for things like location ideas, etc.

Hmm.. I don’t know. When are our photoshoots not crazy? And what’s your definition of crazy? Haha.

Though I guess I’m going to have to pick our League of Legends Pool Party group. That’s the largest group by far for one. We got to play fight in the water (dunking/throwing people in) and do a water balloon fight (which got a bit scary when a water balloon accidentally hit someone in the face).

When you put your costumes together which is you favourite part of the process? Why?

Hmm I would have to say everytime I complete a piece and when I complete the entire set are my favorite parts. It’s just really satisfying to see the finished product especially because I made it with my own two hands and I’m still such noob. So seeing my efforts come to life just makes me really happy.

The whole process is fun though (through the blood, sweat and tears, or burns and needle pricks) cause I get to learn a lot and get better each time.

You have a mixture of hand made and bought costumes, do you think it really matters whether a cosplay is store bought or not?

No I don’t think it matters.

In doing hand made costumes, you get to test and hone your skills in all sorts of areas like sewing and prop making. It’s a really satisfying feeling to finish a project and know that it’s something you made yourself.

In buying costumes, you get to appreciate the craftsmanship of the commissioner or store you bought it from. Also this is a great alternative for people who may not have a lot of time on their hands to make their own costumes to get a chance and enjoy the joys of dressing up as a character they love.

Where/how do you store your props, you seem to have quite a few large ones like Crescent Rose, swords etc.

Honestly I’m running out of places to put them. Most of my costumes are stored in vaccuum seal bags or bins (some of the more, I guess, fragile ones are hung up in my closet). My props, like Crescent Rose, are in random corners of my room (i.e. behind the tv stand or my desk). The down side of still living with my parents is that I really don’t have much room for all my crap.

If you could go back to noob Tennyo Celeste when she first started cosplaying, what would you tell her?

I’m still a noob I think. Haha I mean I started cosplaying in high school (2008) but I never really got into it as much until about 2, almost three years ago. So I guess if I had a chance to talk to myself from 2013, I would say “Just go for it!” I guess a part of me held back at lot because I didn’t exactly have the full support of the people around me. I would always hear comments of “Isn’t it a waste of money?” or “You spent money on something useless again?” And really it’s not a waste because it’s something that I really enjoy and it makes me happy. So why not? It’s not like I’m doing anything harmful to myself or anyone. Better than doing drugs or anything illegal that’s for sure.
