Your armour work is incredible, how do you usually go about designing your armour patterns? What do you prefer to make your armour from?
It generally depends on the piece of armour for example: an arm piece can be made just by taking a few measurements of the arm however, a chest piece is normally a lot harder as the shape can vary greatly. So for a chest piece I normally wrap myself or my tailor dummy in cling film and masking tape (see image below) then mark the design.
All your costumes are quite complicated, on average how long does it take you to make each costume and which has been the most complicated one for you?
It’s hard to put an average on time as I normally rush myself greatly. For instance my tyrande armour took a solid 6weeks to make , but so did my iceddrake shyvanna armour. I think it just depends on how close a convention is haha. But the difference between the two armours are the hours. 6weeks is rather vague when it comes to my tyrande costume, as I pulled 3 ‘all nighters ‘ and didn’t get much sleep all-together whilst crafting this. (That will teach me for rushing lmao)
What has been the most tricky technique you have had to master so far?
Probably crystal casting with built in LED lights. It is generally easy to complete but extremely hard to get a smooth ‘crystal like ‘ surface. (See second image ). Loads of factors including , time, volume and temperature can make this unpredictable.
You have a lot of large armours and weapons, how/where do you store all your costumes?
haha, every cosplayers problem. I started off storing everything in an under stairs cupboard. But I realised it was time for a change when a mountain of costumes started falling out and attacking me, every time I opened the door. So now I’m tackling that by selling older and less used costumes to help fund new projects and clear some space. I have also moved all of the costumes I’ve kept (and there’s still A LOT) to a large fabric cupboard stored in my loft
What advice would you give to new cosplayers?
My more important advice for a new cosplayer is to choose a character you love so much, that it will motivate you to learn tricky and time consuming new things. Also give yourself plenty of time (maybe don’t set yourself a deadline if possible) to complete a project to avoid unnecessary stress (trust me on this ). And just as importantly, if you’ve tried crafting your own costume and you hate it/ don’t enjoy it, don’t be worried about buying a pre-made costume. In the end everyone’s there to have fun (and look awesome)
