Food: Kimchi Village review

Venue:

About 50m from New Malden Station in South London, there is this small store on the high street which looks like any other restaurant but has a wood panelled sign on the door and a window showing food. Yum.

Review:

Being brought up in Korea and living in what is known as the Korea Town of England I am pretty familiar with what good Korea food is. I rarely eat at Korea restaurants that aren’t in New Malden because, to me, it just doesn’t seem right.

Kimchi Village is the first restaurant that seems to have opened up in New Malden that not only serves Korean food but has an all you can eat Korean BBQ! That’s right, all you can eat Korean BBQ. Let that just sink in for a moment. If you’re like me you would expect for the BBQ to cost a fortune but it was only £17 so it was with some trepidation that I decided to go and try it.

For £17 I wasn’t expecting very much and to be fair, the non-BBQ food isn’t as exciting as I thought it would be. They had different types of Gang-poongi and they had some Jajangmyeon which is always good, along with the usual korean side dishes. The actually BBQ was really good! I wasn’t expecting the best quality of meat but i’m pretty sure that the meat i had at Kimchi Village was better than a lot of KBBQ places that i have been to around London. The slices were pretty thick, the marinates were tasty and you get to cook it all yourself! Personally I dislike KBBQ where they cook the meat for you. That is not the Korean way!

The staff there are super friendly and the service is pretty fast when you want drinks. They also make a point to replace your grill after every serving so you dont have to use a cruddy, overcooked grill every time you want to cook some meat.

In all I would say that Kimchi Village is a fantastic place to eat and incredibly good value for money. I’ve been a few times and every time it’s been rather busy, even during the week. I would recommend that if you go at the weekend you make a booking as sometimes there can be a one to two hour wait.
