Cosplayer of the Week: The Moonsquid

The Moonsquid is a cosplayer who was recommended to us and I’m so glad that she was. Her cosplay is outstanding and to top it off she’s a wickedly talented artist. Her page is just full of pretties and everyone should go and like it. We decided to get in contact with her and ask her about her costumes, particularly her amazing facepainting!

Age: 26

Location: Cumbria, United Kingdom

What is your favourite food? Somewhere between medium Indian Curries and a nice Gumbo! Although if I don’t get a tira misu in me from time to time, I might implode.

Your facepainting is amazing, what sort of paints do you use and what advice would you give to people when they do face/body painting?

Hey thanks! That certainly depends on the weather of the event that I am going to, but I tend to stick to two brands religiously; Snazaroo and Ben Nye! Seeing that Snaz is the cheaper of the two, I use it first whenever I can. BUT, as it comes off in water, it’s a massive risk to wear where rain (or sweat) will likely occur. In this situations, I use the thicker, oil based theatrical makeups (as they barely come off with water, soap, and aggressive exfoliation haha).

Advice wise, I’d do my best to keep in mind what it takes to put on and take off the paint (to avoid unnecessary streaks or spending 4 hours in the bathroom when you need to be out the door in 30 minutes). If you’re using a water based paint like Snaz, it’s best to DAB the makeup on with a nice makeup sponge, rather than brushing it on in strokes. You’ll come back with an even tone, rather than streaks smile emoticon

You have done a number of very popular characters, particularly amongst younger people, have you had any funny stories you would like to share with us?

Oh there are a few things that come to mind! I was hired to wear Sally at a children’s entertainment venue for Halloween one year, and the children that came were so afraid of me that they stayed away the entire time. I had to start dancing like some kind of mad octupus to get anything resembling a smile out of them. And then, as Princess Bubblegum at a convention, some young kid decided our group was so spectacular, that he just HAD to give us… “Spicy hugs”. I’m not sure what made them spicy, and to this day I can’t fathom what exactly that meant.

Your sally costume is fantastic, I like the way you have done the stitch effects on her arms and legs, can you talk us through what you did to achieve it?

Ahh! Thank you so much! It was certainly a pain, and I had to set aside a few hours to get that done. What I basically do is paint my arms and legs, and then wear grey dyed tights over them (the arms as well, using the “tights gloves” technique, which there are quite a few great tutorials on). With the tights on me, I drew the seams on with a marker and then… with a bunch of embroidery floss, began to sew the stitches onto myself. Let me tell you, I felt SO in character, I was nearly laughing the entire time!

You are also an artist and do some lovely illustrations, do you ever find your art skills come in handy for your cosplay, and vice versa?

I like to imagine that it does! Besides the fact that I tend to do a lot of Amano cosplays (which I like to physically paint on in order to recreate the feeling of his pieces), I try to find different excuses to paint on whatever I make. In the least pretentious way possible, I feel like coming at every costume from the view of an illustrator helps me bring a different angle to the characters, as I like to put something of an original spin onto everything I do. For Zelda, I was able to do a lot of painting on the jewellery and armour, giving it an extra layer of depth (which of course isn’t original, but I feel helps massively with making armour look better in photos). With San, I did a lot of distressing / painting on the skirt in order to make it look more realistic / lived in, and the mask itself was a piece of art unto itself.

What advice would you give to new cosplayers

Give yourself PLENTY of time to work. 80% of getting better is working through and correcting mistakes, and believe me, you will make a lot of them. If you give yourself enough leeway to make a mistake, figure it out, and fix it, you will learn so much AND have a costume you can be proud of. And nothing feels better than that!
