Cosplayer of the Week: Vandrob Cosplay

This week we are featuring the wonderfully beautiful Vandrob Cosplay. This German cosplayer is not only an involved in the German cosplay magazine Cohaku, but she’s got some incredible costumes and photos. She’s definitely someone that you should be checking out!

You have done a huge variety of costumes, what is it that draws you to a character?

Although I often love the dark and badass characters, sometimes I just want to be a princess.

Your Gwendolyn cosplay has these beautiful hip pieces that look like feathers, what are they made from and how did you make them?

I made Gwendolyns feathers with craft foam! I cut the form and added details with a soldering iron. Afterwards I glued everything on a base out of eva-foam, shaped them with the heat gun and sealed it with wood glue. After sanding it down, you can paint it with acrylic spray paint. It consumed a lot of time, but I’m quite happy with the results!

You also have some beautiful pictures, what has been some of the craziest stuff you have done to get a picture?

I think the craziest shooting was Zatanna. VonNao and I just had the crazy idea to spontaneously shoot this because he was writing an article for a photolocation special in the German issue of Cohaku Magazine. So we drove to a closed down coal-mine, which is opened for – mainly landscape – photographers. It was freaking cold and I was climbing with my high heels on those rusty building parts and even hanging from a steel rope. I think my whole body hurt for a week (laughs). I love challenges for a photo and I’m ready for almost anything – jumping into water, laying in the dirt and even trash a cosplay. I think VonNao and I are a well-balanced team and we do have many plans, even some crazier ones. Although I would never do anything illegal or lethal.

I noticed that you are involved in Cohaku, what has it been like being part of the team and watching it grow? Has being part of Cohaku changed how you view cosplay?

For everybody who doesn’t know what Cohaku is: It’s a cosplay magazine focusing on the craftsmanship aspect of cosplay, including mainly tutorials from cosplayers for cosplayers. Being part of Cohaku Magazine makes me very happy! It’s awesome to watch it grow and how it establishes itself in the community. My view of cosplay has actually changed a lot. I get to know all those talented and interesting people from all around the world! It’s interesting how the community in every country is so different. All that creativity and passion is wonderful.

What has been the most tricky technique you have had to master so far?

I love make-up and handicraft work! Testing new techniques is sometimes challenging, but the most tricky thing I have ever done – even more than making my own latex Batgirl mask – is actually sewing a corsage! I would have never managed so sew my Corsage for Gwendolyn without some tips and tricks from friends. I admire people who can sew beautiful dresses and I think it’s sometimes quite underrated.

What advice would you give to new cosplayers?

Take your time! I’d rather do one cosplay I’m very proud of instead of rushing something down. Look at the character and how the costume is made. Don’t be shy to ask people for help! But, in the end, the most important part is fun. Do what you love. Find out how costume making makes the most fun for you and then go out with your friends and enjoy it!
