Cosplayer of the Week: Izzys Cosplay

This week our Cosplayer of the Week comes from one of my personal favourite places, Australia. Specifically Brisbane. We caught up with Izzys Cosplay, a talented young cosplayer with a huge repertoire of costumes. Once of the things I love about Izzys Cosplay, besides her awesome costumes, is that she always looks like she’s having fun. Enough of me though, here’s what Izzy has to say.

Age: My age is 19 about to turn 20.

Location/Nationality: Australia.

What is your favourite meal?

My favourite meal is definitely chicken nuggets, hahaha, if that doesn’t count Honey Chicken is a close second!

What inspires you to cosplay

My friends and other cosplayers inspire me to cosplay! I see what my friends and people I look up to are making and it encourages me to do better and try new things. When I see new outfits on my favourite characters the urge to cosplay them is always very, very strong.

What has been your best experience in cosplay?

My best experience in cosplay was winning a local cosplay competition! Myself and two friends won best Cosplay group in the Madman cosplay competition at Supanova Gold Coast! We dressed up as Peeta Mellark, Katniss Everdeen and Cesare Flickerman.

So Australia is known for its heat, how do you cope with being in bigger and heavier costumes at conventions?

It’s super difficult with the heat here in Australia and a lot of our conventions are during summer months Most of the time we grit and bear it and just hope the air con is super cold when we get there! Otherwise we leave putting on the costume till the last minute and carry lots of cold water around with us, some friends even have spray bottles on hand if it gets too hot!

How easy is it to get materials around where you live?

Materials aren’t too hard to come by, we have quite a few fabric superstores in Brisbane, Australia where I’m from. But a lot of Australian cosplayers still buy online as it can sometimes work out to be cheaper and there is always a more diverse range online. Worbla is also very expensive and hard to get a hold of over here

What has been your favourite costume to date and what would be your dream cosplay?

My favourite cosplay to date would be Nonon Jakuzure from Kill la Kill because she is such a fun and comfortable costume to wear and she is one of my favourite characters from the anime. My dream cosplay would either be Peter Pan (Disney) or Nonon’s Battle Regalia outfit.

What advice would you give to other cosplayers?

My advice to any cosplayer is have fun!! Don’t worry what others will say about your costume or whether people will love it, you’re doing it for you! So try your best and remember to have fun, don’t let anyone’s negativity stand in your way!

What has been the most interesting/difficult technique you have used so far?

The most difficult technique for me is pleating and body suits!! I find them super difficult to get right and it always takes me a couple of goes!!
