Free Comic Book Day

Dark Side Comics by Anna

On Saturday Eddie and I went to check out Dark Side Comics over in Chelmsford. Dark Side Comics is a small comic book store that I have been to many times and expect to go to many times more. The store is run by the Holly, who is a delightful and bouncy young woman who puts me to shame by simply having a comic book store in her early 20s. Seriously, she’s really young and so nice, it’s annoying.

Holly always makes a big effort for Free Comic Book Day and, although it isn’t as busy as the big London stores, the atmosphere is fun and friendly. The hugely talented Jack Lawrence was there selling prints and drawing commissions. Although the selection of free comics wasn’t as big as other stores but Holly made sure there was a good selection for comic readers of all ages. While I hoped there was an Avatar comic, to fuel the fangirl inside me, I ended up picking up Dark Circle. I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t read this yet.

For a small comic book shop Dark Side Comics was really busy for the hours that I was there with customers coming in and out all day. Many people hung around to chat with each other and the general vibe of the comic book store reminded me of one of those country convenience stores where everyone knows each other.

The Cosplay was really good with cosplayers there dressed as Harley Quinn, Black Widow, Superman and Elsa. There was even a tiny Luke Skywalker and a baby Ewok where the cuteness levels went through the roof! Although it wasn’t hugely busy Holly’s mum was on hand to make sure everyone was fed, watered and generally having a good time.

If you are ever in need of a day out where you want to chat with some friends then I highly suggest going to Dark Side Comics, whether its on Free Comic Book Day or not. To make things even better the first Saturday of every month is board game day where you can play board games for just £5 all day.

Dead Universe comics and Atomic Pizza by Neroli Cosplay

This past May Bank Holiday weekend was an exciting one! Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May the 4th on Monday and an exciting comic themed weekend of activities organised by Dead Universe Comics in Aylesbury.

On the Sunday Eddie and I went to go and check out Dead Universe Comics and the events they had set up. They’d worked very hard on creating a weekend packed full of events like a costume fun run for charity, a tombola, raffles, guest comic book writers and guests, gaming and cosplay! Go give them a visit if you can on Saturday the 9th May when the relocate to their new store!

We’d fulfilled the cosplay part of Food and Cosplay, next was on to the food! My favourite place to eat is a place in Oxford called Atomic Pizza. A restaurant kitted out with all your favourite collectables and memorabilia from some of the most loved cult classics in Sci Fi and Fantasy with a menu to match! The menu features pizza and burgers named after some of our heroes with carefully thought out ingredients to match! I had the Boris Karloff pizza, where you create your own Frankenstein pizza, as you have to select your own toppings to make your own creation! When my pizza arrived it was perfect. Beautifully presented and so damn tasty!

I could rave about how clever the menu is for ages, especially as you get a sticker when you eat something from the menu for your Atomic Pizza sticker book. Collect so many as you go along and collect free rewards to use for your next meal! There’s even a food challenge if you can stomach it. A friend of mine has tried this challenge, and it defeated him! I honestly thought of all people that he could do it. But don’t worry, if you don’t make it you still get a ‘Loser’ Tshirt!

Everything about this restaurant is amazing. The way it’s decorated – a Han Solo in Carbonite door, The VHS and Doctor Who room, Star Wars collectables everywhere; to the nostalgic music and music videos across the ages to match, as well as the most tasty food and milkshakes, friendly service and don’t forget the pac-man arcade machine!

There’s also an Atomic Burger down the same road in Cowley, as well as another in Bristol. Do try and check it out if you’re in the area, and let me know as well as I love any excuse to go there!
