What inspires you to cosplay

So many things. Representing characters and movies/games/shows I love, being able to run around being silly with my friends, and challenging myself to do something new come to mind.

What’s your favourite meal?

Toughie. I love me a good steak, honestly. Put it with a sweet potato and an artichoke, and I’m in heaven!

What has been your best experience in cosplay?

That’s really tough! One thing I love is when people recognize me when I’m cosplaying a more obscure character. Those people tend to be very enthusiastic to find someone who enjoys the same obscure character or game as themselves. It allows you to bond over your mutual extreme levels of nerdiness. Haha

What was it like to cosplay the ballerina from Cabin in the Woods?

Completely surreal, honestly. I had no idea of the level of response she would get from the cosplay community. Usually my horror cosplays don’t get much notice outside from horror cosplay fans. So this has been a very different and humbling experience. Cosplaying her is an insane amount of fun. Since people often don’t realize I can see in the mask, their responses and facial expressions are usually hilarious to watch. They either look grossed out, mildly terrified, or have giant grins on their face. I love getting to see that.

What has been the most interesting/difficult technique you have used so far?

That would probably be Effie Trinket’s (Hunger Games: Catching Fire) butterfly dress. Initially, I ordered feather butterflies in bulk, cut off the wings, and attached them to the dress. But halfway through (about 250 wings), my supplier ran out of butterflies. I actually almost gave up the project. But after a bit of thought, I photocopied several of the wings, printed out about 20 dozen copies, Mod Podge’d them, cut them out, and used those for the other half of the dress. It turned an initially very basic project into something much more time consuming and tedious, but it actually worked very well. I’m extremely proud of that dress, and of myself for not giving up on it.

If there is one shop/website you could recommend for cosplay supplies, what would it be?

Since my general focus tends to be makeup intensive costumes, I frequent SillyFarm.com. It carries a wide variety of makeups, both for pretty and gory projects. I recommend it highly.

What advice would you give to other cosplayers? (this can be anything from costume/con tips to dealing with haters)

Don’t be afraid to try something new. Sometimes tackling something a little outside of your wheelhouse can really help you improve. Also, don’t listen to the haters. You could be the best costumer in the world, and the internet would still find something negative to say about you. Just be you and have fun.
